Pizza

Pizza had been known in the East Coast U.S. cities, from their Italian migrant communities, since the early 1900s but it was not until the G.I.s returned from the Second World War in Italy, that it became popular throughout the United States. Pizza did not become popular in Australia until the 1970s.

Comment on "On the Beach"

from São Paulo, Brazil

As human and true as a book gets!
I have read few books as touching, as moving, as thought-provoking, and as terrifying as "On The Beach". Needless to say, the message in this book will ring and resonate to everyone as long as we foolish, unwise humans have the power to destroy everything at our finger tips. Anyone that proclaims to be human must read this book. Although the scientific part is fairly incorrect, the human feeling of the book is as far-reaching as many other master pieces of literature have been. Absolutely magnificent!

Comments on "On the Road"

the most meaningful book in the world
when I first read On The Road I was just 16. I knew next to nothing about the world. because of it I decided to take a 2 week road trip to LA with a friend which remains the crowning achievement in my life. His description of rolling America and saintly, sad, desolation angels scattered across the landscape touched my life and opened my eyes to a new horizon of living. Every book I have read by Kerouac I've loved and I remain an avid follower

A life changing masterpiece....
Kerouac's On The Road is a classic example of one man doing what everyone else secretly wants to. His trips across the country have inspired many to follow his lead and just live. Although that Kerouac's lifestyle is much more difficult to achieve these days, his book still leaves a huge impact on whomever reads it. A must read for anyone who wants to get the most from life.

Comment on "The Alexandria Quartet"
(including "Justine")

from George Yfantidis flame2@usa.net from Thessaloniki Greece

Alexandria Quartet is the novel of the millenium
It is not a Masterpiece. It is the best book ever written. Full of characters poetry and love. Lawrence durrell said that it is an inquiry about modern love. This book is perfect in every sence. Alexandria the city with its beauty and decline is the inspiration power. The novel of the millenium. Really. This book has the power to change your life or at least put you in a world so exotic amazing and real that you will start losing your words and breath.

Comment on "The Black Cloud"

A great book!!
May be I'm sentimental, because this is the first science fiction book I ever loved. But Hoyle's ability to merge in the 'Black Cloud' scientific hypothesis and imagination, a great plot and great characters, is in my opinion unsurpassed in contemporary SF.
Unfortunatly, U.S. readers seem to be not familiar with this book: despite its age, I would STRONGLY recommend it to any SF reader

Comment on "The Seventh Seal"

from Emanuel Mendes Rodrigues from Araguari, Brazil

Great Work of Art
This is one of Bergman's best films. The story of a medieval knight who returns from the Crusades and one day encounters with death himself, and, in order to save his life, challenges him to play chess, is powerful, deep, and a truly work of art. The film has a fantastic realism, thanks to the wonderful photography by Gunnar Fischer. But it also talks about religion and existencial matters; the knight(played wonderfully by Max Von Sydow)is constantly questioning the existence of God, and this is a constant in Bergman's filmography. The title of the film is about the secrets of God, locked with seven seals. A masterpiece.

It's great!
This movie is excellent. However, it is best in black and white. Henry Fonda is superb! Everyone should see this film.
