As a boy, Harry Secombe, who was born in Swansea on 8 September 1921, developed a popular act as an impersonator in church socials. After completing war service as a pay clerk, Harry got a job as impersonator at the Windmill Theatre. Here, he introduced singing into his act and met Peter Sellers and Michael Bentine. These three, together with Spike Milligan (who Harry Secombe had met in the army), created the Goon Show for BBC radio.

Harry went on to have a successful career both in movies and stage comedy and as a singer, particularly in musicals such as Pickwick and Oliver!

He died on 11 April 2001, aged 79, from prostate cancer. He had been suffering from diabetes and a stroke.
