The physical infrastructure of the film industry had survived the War better in Italy than elsewhere in Europe and it was here that post-European War film making first flourished. Filmmakers attempted to realistically portray the bleak conditions of post-war Europe using real locations and non-professional, as well as professional, actors in a style known as "neorealism". The great masters of this style were  Roberto Rossellini, Luchino Visconti and Vittoria De Sica.

As Europe became more prosperous through the fifties, neorealism disappeared but several talented directors, who had begun as neorealists, kept Italian movies prominent. These included Federico Fellini, Michaelangelo Antonioni, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Bernado Bertolucci.
