In France, a new generation of filmmakers emerged in the 1950s. This began
with popular successes by directors such as Roger Vadim and Louis Malle and
continued with a group of filmmakers, known as the New Wave. Influenced by the
Italian neorealists, they used hand-held
cameras and location shooting to produce low budget films, many of which
achieved great critical and commercial success. These filmmakers included Claude
Chabrol, Francois Truffaut, Alain Resnais, Jean-Luc Godard, and Jacques Demy.
Other directors not of the New Wave school to emerge in France in the sixties include
Claude Lelouche and Eric Rohmer.
