Immediately after the War, an extremely conservative British cinema emerged
making mainly film versions of stage and literary classics. It was not until the
mid-fifties that, under the influence of the French New Wave, British filmmakers
began producing low budget, social realist films. Again, increasing prosperity
brought an end to the social realist movement but it produced a number of
directors who had great success in the mid-sixties. These included Tony
Richardson, John Schlesinger, Richard Lester and Ken Russell. American Stanley Kubrick and
Pole Roman Polanski also made their most important films in Britain during this
period. (Roman Polanski moved to Hollywood in the late sixties and early
seventies to become part of the "renaissance" of American cinema.)
